3DFreeForm – Digitally-assisted Anterior Composite Restorations

Combine digital 3D printing technology and freehand composite techniques to achieve predictable and aesthetic anterior restorations.

Course Overview & Schedule

This course is designed for dentists, whether they have 3D printing capabilities in their office or not. All levels of digital aptitude are welcome. Participants will be shown the CAD design of 3DFreeForm matrices and given instructions on how to communicate with their lab for design and fabrication. (This is not a CAD design course.)

Day 1

Lecture
  • Introduction to 3DFreeForm
  • Indications for definitive restorations vs matrix technique
  • Breakdown of proper tooth preparation, adhesion, and finishing of 3DFreeForm restorations
  • A brief overview of the design of a single anterior tooth
  • Color science principles to achieve natural and harmonious results with direct composite
  • Achieving balance and harmony in the smile of a patient with peg laterals
  • Restoring a diastema predictably: managing midline, contours, and papilla
Hands-on
  • Restoring a peg lateral–measured, predictable, and balanced
  • Restoring a diastema between central incisors
Day 2

Lecture
  • Morphology review to understand tooth anatomy, including an in-depth breakdown of line angles to create restorations that seamlessly blend with natural dentition
  • An overview of practical workflows—from analog to digital and communication to the lab or in-house lab
  • Walk through a digital smile design, including a photography review
  • Demonstration of digital smile design for #6-#11
Hands-on
  • Warm-up exercise — achieving the perfect line angles utilizing finishing techniques
  • Restoring 6-11 — from start to finish

Meet the Instructor

Carolyn  Kittell, DDS

Dr. Carolyn Kittell specializes in complex restorative and cosmetic dentistry. She is the owner of a thriving private practice, Smile Essentials, outside of Denver in Greenwood Village, CO. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Oklahoma, where she was a student-athlete. Following in her father’s footsteps, she began her career in dentistry by acquiring her Bachelor of Science degree in Dental Hygiene. After practicing Hygiene for five years, she continued on to receive her Doctor of Dental Surgery from the University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry.

To continue to deliver the highest quality of care to her patients, she is a strong believer in continuing education. Staying at the forefront of technology and restorative techniques is a core value of her practice. She is an active Faculty Club Member at Spear Education and a member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, Pierre Fauchard Academy, Colorado Dental Association, American Dental Association, and Metro Denver Dental Society.

She is a dedicated knowledge seeker, and through her practice’s transition from analog to digital, she has created a state-of-the-art, in-house dental lab. Dr. Kittell is involved in every step of the design and fabrication process. This ensures that her esthetic and functional vision is best in class for every one of her patients.

Dr. Kittell has developed 3DFreeForm, a direct composite technique that incorporates digital smile design, 3D printing, and composite techniques for beautiful direct composite restorations. She is passionate about teaching and spreading her knowledge with fellow dentists. She gives lectures across the country, sharing her skill set on topics including cosmetics and digital dentistry.

She is recognized for her expertise and influence in the field and is a Key Opinion Leader for Amann Girrbach, Cosmedent and DentaFab. Dr. Kittell plays a crucial role in evaluating and providing feedback on innovative technologies and materials, including Beta testing for digital software.
When Dr. Kittell is not practicing and teaching, she is traveling with her husband and 2 dogs. Her travels fuel her creative nature.
