Class Summary

In this course Dr. Fahl will teach you how to achieve perfect occlusal anatomy in order to minimize adjustment and optimize function and esthetics of posterior composite restorations. You will learn several layering techniques suitable for different cavity types and sizes, which result in restorations with enhanced biomechanical properties and unmatched esthetics.

 

Class Overview/Schedule

Day 1

  • Lecture:
  1. Posterior challenges – direct composites or inlays/onlays?
  2. Anatomical landmarks for the perfect posterior composite restoration.
  3. Direct Layering Techniques – Monochromatic, Bichromatic and Polychromatic.
  4. Choosing your composites for posterior restorations.
  5. Matrices, wedges and rings – getting tight proximal contacts with Class II’s.
  • Hands-on:
  1. Restoring an upper quadrant according to different cavity types and layering techniques - #12 (OD) – monochromatic [light cured], #13 (MOD) – bichromatic [light cured], #14 (MOV) – polychromatic [light cured and Cosmecore], #15 (O) – monochromatic [light cured and Cosmecore].


Day 2

  • Hands-on Continued:
  • Restoring an upper quadrant according to different cavity types and layering techniques - #12 (OD) – monochromatic [light cured], #13 (MOD) – bichromatic [light cured], #14 (MOV) – polychromatic [light cured and Cosmecore], #15 (O) – monochromatic [light cured and Cosmecore].
  • Lecture:
  1. The silicone dye composite onlay – what, why and how.
  • Hands-on:
  1. Fabricating indirect composite inlay/onlay on a silicone dye model - #14 (Large MO) – monochromatic, #15 (Large MOL) – bichromatic
  2. Finishing and polishing
  3. Wrap-up/round table

Dr. Newton Fahl

newtonDr. Newton Fahl Jr. received his DDS degree from Londrina State University, Brazil, in 1987. In 1989 he received the Certificate in Operative Dentistry and Master of Science degree from the University of Iowa, USA. After returning to Brazil, he settled in Curitiba, where he maintains a private practice emphasizing esthetic and cosmetic dentistry. Dr. Fahl is the scientific director of the FAHL CENTER, where he conducts courses on Esthetic Dentistry.

Dr. Newton Fahl, Jr. is a member of the American Academy of Esthetic Dentistry (AAED), and founding member and past-president of the Brazilian Society of Aesthetic Dentistry (BSAD). He is a MCG-Hinman Foundation fellow. Dr. Fahl is the recipient of the American Academy of Esthetic Dentistry 2008 President's Award for Best Teacher and the recipient of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry 2011 Excellence in Cosmetic Dental Education Award. He is President of SCAD (Society for Color and Appearance in Dentistry).

Dr. Fahl has published several enlightening articles on direct and indirect bonding techniques. He is on the editorial board of several peer-reviewed journals, and is an active consultant for several manufacturers in the development and refinement of new materials and techniques.
