POWERlooking: Strengthening the Dental Eye: A Guide to Assessing Esthetic Smiles


Class Summary

There are a number of variables that must be mastered and implemented in order to achieve an esthetic result. This introductory level course will provide attendees with the foundation necessary to objectively evaluate dental esthetics and immediately implement these principles to daily practice utilizing direct composite resin.

Class Overview/Schedule

Day 1

  • Lecture:
  1. Applying principles of smile design and analysis of proportions
  2. Examination of anterior morphology
  3. Importance of the mid-line "Critical Zone"
  4. Material selection – which composites to choose and where to use them
  • Hands-on:
  1. Single shade composite veneers


  • Lecture:
  1. Understanding the components of the polychromatic incisal edge
  2. Utilizing hue, value and chroma to determine color
  3. The application of the palatal stent
  • Hands-on:
  1. Polychromatic Class IV

Day 2

  • Lecture:
  1. Opacity vs translucency – the what and the when
  2. Effectively masking fracture lines
  3. Color theory continued
  • Hands-on:
  1. Polychromatic class IV restoration continued


  • Lecture:
  1. Finishing and Polishing techniques
  2. Discussion of texture and its impact on shape
  3. Wrap-up
  • Hands-on:
  1. Polychromatic direct composite veneers

  • Correct the “non-esthetic” smile with direct composite resin veneers.

Arhtur Volker Website Bio
Dr. Volker graduated from the Columbia University School of Dental and Oral Surgery. He is the Chairman of the New Dentist Committee and a member of the Continuing Education Committee for the New York State Academy of General Dentistry. Dr. Volker is a Diplomate of the World Congress of Minimally Invasive Dentistry and is a Fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry and the American College of Dentists. He was a clinical attending at the Coler-Goldwater Specialty Hospital and Nursing Facility on Roosevelt Island, and is in private practice in New York, with an emphasis on cosmetic and minimally invasive dentistry. Dr. Volker has published articles and lectures nationally and internationally on such topics as cosmetic dentistry, minimally invasive dentistry, dental materials and dental implants.
